Chia Seed Oil: What is it good for and how to use it?

Chia seeds are well known for their nutritional and antioxidant content, with variety of vitamins and minerals they have a proven record for displaying certain health benefits.

Chia seeds are derived from a plant called Salvia Hispanica which is part of the mint family. This plant is native to Mexico and Guatemala.

In this post we will cover what the chia seeds oil is, how it’s made, its benefits and how to use it for your hair and skin problems.

What is Chia seed oil and how is it made?

Chia seed oil is created by cold pressing the chia seeds in low temperatures so they extract the natural oils. Chia seeds contain approximately 30% of oil so the oil is relatively easy to extract.

If you’ve ever cooked with chia seeds, you’d know they don’t really have a smell so you may be wondering what the chia seed oil smells like right? It doesn’t smell of anything either.

Chia seed oil is a healthy alternative to certain oils, and can be used for cooking, improving hair and skin as well as heart and brain health.

The nutrition profile of the oil is also very impressive, not only it is rich in omega-3 and 6 fats (healthy fats) but also include 18 out of 20 amino acids. This is incredible and something that is definitely lacking in other oils.

What is chia seed oil good for?

1. May help you look more youthful

The chia seed oil is rich in omega-3 and 6 fats as well as other oils like oleic and stearic fats. These fats are linked to healthier skin by protecting it against UV rays and also hydrating it. This helps the skin look rejuvenated and delays the onset of wrinkles [1] [2] [3].

Some early research has also shown for the omega-3 and omega-6 fats to prevent and reduce the symptoms of dermatitis [4] as well as preventing skin cancer especially one caused by UV rays [5] [6].

How to use chia seed oil for skin?

This oil should definitely become a part of your daily skincare routine! It is excellent for conditioning the skin and restoring its natural barriers. You can simply apply the chia seed oil onto the skin and rub it in just like any other cream. However, you can also mix it up with other creams or anti-aging serums if you wanted to. All you need to do is add both cream or serum with the chia seed oil to make a perfect skincare product.

One thing to be cautious of is that this oil is not for every skin type. This is perfect for anyone who has a dry to mixed skin. However you should take caution if you have an oily skin you should probably avoid it because it can be comodogenic. This means that it may clog pores.

2. May improve hair and reduce frizz

Keeping hair silky smooth and healthy is one of the top goals for women, the struggle is real!

Whether you have curly hair and suffer from frizz or straight hair that just flops, chia seed may be of help here.

So, what does the chia seed oil do for the hair?

Frizzy hair is not just due to curly hair or due to genetics, it can be caused by damaged cuticles. If you use any heat, products with silicone and other chemicals or washing it too often can cause swelling and dryness to the cuticles. This causes that frizzy appearance.

The chia seed oil is excellent for dry and damaged hair. It softens the hair shaft without greasy or sticky residue. It also locks moisture in the hair reducing the static effect making the hair easy to comb and brush through.

At this point you may wonder if the oil can help to grow your hair, right? Some companies do claim this to be true but it is not. Although the oil is rich in amino acids, it is unlikely to stimulate hair growth.

To stimulate hair growth you need to increase blood flow. To do that you can use a head scratcher with oil or conditioner. All you need to do is apply the oil evenly onto the hair, especially on the scalp and use the head scratcher to stimulate blood flow.

3. May strengthen the hair and make it shiny

With the oil being high in healthy fats, it penetrates through the hair shaft and keeping it hydrated and protects it from breaking. This helps the hair to stay smooth and brings out its natural shine [7].

How to use the chia seed oil for hair?

There are a few tips and tricks up our sleeves we’d like to share. Firstly, one of the most common methods for using the oil on the hair is by simply spreading it evenly on damp hair. Alternatively, you can use a small amount on dry hair to reduce frizziness.

One little trick that we’ve learnt from a professional hairdresser, Joanna Solowska, is to apply the oil onto the wet or damp hair, roll it up in a plastic bag and then use a hair dryer to increase temperature. You will open the hair follicles and allow the moisture to go into the hair where it needs to go.

4. May keep your heart healthy

The chia seed oil is a great alternative to olive oil and vegetable oils especially to keep your heart healthy. This is because the chia seed oil is rich in the plant-based omega-3 fats which are well known for keeping your cholesterol in check. Increased cholesterol is one of the biggest causes of cardiovascular problems [8] [9].

5. Supports proper brain function

Who would of thought that an oil could help brain function but in this case it can!

As mentioned above, this oil is rich in omega-3 fats. These fats have shown great effects for preventing Alzheimer’s disease and mental health problems like depression [10] [11] [12].

Summary

In summary, this oil has incredible benefits for the skin, hair, heart and brain. It is a perfect alternative to olive oils and vegetables oils as it contains more healthy fats than saturated fats which is the main beneficial nutrient of the chia seed oil.
